Ekrin Athletics: An Overview

Since late 2019, we’ve actively promoted Ekrin Athletics because, in our mind, they have some of the highest quality massage guns around. Sure, the likes of Theragun and Hypervolt steal the headlines, but Ekrin has been the unspoken underdog that has seen explosive growth over the last few years.

Why so much growth? Because they’re a company that invests heavily in R&D, quality assurance, and most importantly, customer satisfaction. And for those reasons, Ekrin Athletics has firmly seated themselves as one of the top players in the oversaturated massage gun market.

So here we are, 3 years later and our opinion of the company has not wavered. Although they’re no longer considered a “small startup from Boston”, Ekrin Athletics continues to deliver exceptional products, backed by the industry’s best warranty.

Standout Features:

  • 5 hour battery life
  • 4 Locking massage heads included
  • Reactive Force Sensor
  • Lightweight at 1.7lbs
  • Excellent carrying case and USB-C cable included

Wish List:

  • Include a charging adapter

Ekrin 365 Review

Ok, let’s dive head first into our Ekrin 365 review, because that’s why you’re here, right?

If you read no further than this, here is what you should know about the brand new Ekrin 365 summed up in one (possibly run-on) sentence:

The Ekrin 365 is one of the best built, best performing, most ergonomic, quietest, most affordable massage guns you can currently buy, period.

That’s a pretty lofty claim, but we have all the reasons in the world to back it up. Let us explain.

You see, the Ekrin 365 may be brand new, but it’s actually an evolutionary by-product of its predecessors. Starting with the B37, then the B37S, and later the BANTAM, the 365 borrows all the best features that made each of those unique and combines them into one complete device. Brilliant!

The Ekrin B37 + B37S + BANTAM = 365

To understand what we mean by “evolution” of the Ekrin 365, we have to start at the beginning.

The OG Ekrin B37, the massage gun that started it all, was and is phenomenal. To this day, we still consider it one of the best massage guns out there. The B37 offers every option you could want including a powerful motor, multiple massage heads, and superior design. The B37 introduced the ergonomic, user friendly 15 degree angled handle to the world and that design language has been passed down to each subsequent model.

Next came the more powerful B37S. With a motor that’s 30% more powerful than the B37, the B37S is perfect for deep tissue massage. Also introduced with the B37S is the Reactive Force Sensor and Locking Massage Heads. All said, the B37S proves to be a worthy upgrade over the original.

Then, along came the diminutive BANTAM. The BANTAM is essentially a mini version of the B37 massage guns. Not only is the BANTAM more palpable in the hand but it also introduces USB-C charging, a very welcome improvement over the old AC adapters.

Finally, we have the Ekrin 365. With near identical looks to the B37 and B37S, the 365 is slightly smaller in size, weighs less, has locking massage heads, carries over the Reactive Force Sensor, AND is charged via USB-C.

Like we said, all of the best features have all been sunk into the Ekrin 365 and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

Design Cues: B37 vs Ekrin 365

Interestingly enough, the Ekrin B37 was one of the first massage guns we ever reviewed here on Recovatech. Talk about first impressions. We were immediately blown away. Not only is its design unlike any other massage gun out there, but it is rock solid.

Although we are fans, if you’re not in love with the design of the previous Ekrin massage guns, the 365 will be a huge disappointment.

We’re not 100% certain, but we would estimate that the overall footprint of the Ekrin 365 is approximately 20-25% smaller than the B37. Not only that, but they also shaved off about 0.5lbs bringing the total weight of the 365 down to 1.7lbs.

Frankly, we think the 2.2lbs of the B37 is quite manageable for most users, so consider that weight reduction a very pleasant upgrade.

Also a nice surprise, the circumference of the handle is thinner than before and 10% longer. So now, not only is the Elkrin 365 easier to hold, especially if you have smaller hands, but it’s easier to reach those impossible spots in the middle of your back.

Reactive Force Sensor and Locking Massage Heads

Two of the most prominent additions to the $329.99 B37S is the Reactive Force Sensor and the Locking massage heads. What’s pretty neat about the Ekrin 365 is that they decided to pack those two features in with it!

The Reactive Force Sensor as the name implies, is a pressure sensor that indicates with lights if you’re applying too much downward pressure on your body. The more you press down on the skin, the more lights around the top ring light up. It’s a very basic feature, but for those worried about bruising themselves or inducing more muscle soreness, it’s a great addition.

The other carryover feature is the locking massage heads.

Most massage guns today require you to forcefully mount the massage head by pressing them in the massager. To remove them, you then have to use all your strength to do the opposite. It’s not ideal and requires way more effort than it should.

The solution? Locking massage heads.

With a simple twist, the massage heads thread into the massager and lock in place. It’s very simple to do and believe it or not, safer too. It’s not uncommon for massage heads to become instant projectiles if not securely fastened.

Ultimately, it’s such a simple feature and more manufacturers should follow suit.

Massage Head Attachments

Ekrin Athletics has been very prudent, yet intentional with the massage heads they include. You get everything you need without the fluff. Some companies now include upwards of 10-15 extraneous (and sometimes questionable) attachments. Trust us, you don’t need ’em all.

Each of the 4 attachments included with the Ekrin 365 have a specific use and purpose, which are:

Ball Head

The ball head is a general purpose, do all massage attachment. Made from hollow silicone, the ball can be used on almost every part of the body without consequence. It’s soft enough that even if you were to accidentally run it over a body spot, it won’t hurt. If we’re guessing, you will likely use this one the most.

Cone Head

The cone head has a small piece of rubber on the tip, but is otherwise hard plastic. This attachment you’ll want to use a bit more carefully, but it’s great for trigger points or other small, hard-to-reach areas of the body.

Fork Head

Using a massage gun around the spine would typically not be advised unless you use the fork head. With two spaced out tips, you can safely glide the fork attachment up the paraspinal muscles without hitting the spine itself (ouch)!

Alternatively, if you suffer with a tight Achilles tendon, try using the fork head along the adjoining tissues to help get things loose.

Flat Head

Reminiscent of a tenderizing hammer, the flat head is the perfect choice for large muscle groups such as the Quads. For those of you that want a bit more “punch” to your massage, this is the one for you.

Power and Performance

Oftentimes when we think of a “mid-range” massage gun, we think of a compromised, stripped down version of a flagship. Really, it’s not unheard of to be willing to get a massager with less power and features in exchange for a discounted price. With the Ekrin 365, by and large, that’s not the case at all.

Relative to everything else out there, we find the Ekrin 365 delivers more than enough percussive power. On the lowest settings, the massage is gentle and soothing. On high, you might find yourself dialing it back to a lower setting. It’s very punchy and works wonderfully on tight muscles. If you’re worried that the Ekrin 365 won’t be powerful enough, for most, you won’t have anything to worry about.

If you compare the specs of the Ekrin 365 vs Ekrin B37, there are small differences, but not significant ones.

For the astute, the $50 premium for the B37 only nets you 1 extra speed, slightly more stall force, and a bit more battery life. With that said, the B37 lacks the Reactive Force Sensor, the locking massage heads, and USB-C charging, which we’ll talk about next.

Battery Life and Charging

One of the most significant upgrades to the Ekrin 365 is the inclusion of USB-C. In an era with so many charging standards, it’s nice to see the electronics industry adopting one standard, USB-C.

In the box, Ekrin does include a USB-C cable but unfortunately does not include a power brick. That’s a common trend nowadays and it sort of makes sense for those that already have a drawer full of unused charging bricks, but a major inconvenience if you don’t happen to have a spare.

The good news is, the opposite end of the cable does fit in any universal USB port which are readily found on most computers, cars, etc. It’s a small tradeoff, but one you should be aware of.

More good news, the Ekrin 365 is powered by a 1600 mAh Samsung battery. So far, we’ve found the battery to be reliable and charges quickly.

With an estimated 5 hours of total runtime on a single charge, that’s more than enough power for numerous 20 minute massage sessions. Your miles may vary, but that should last the average user a week or more without topping off the battery again.

Warranty and Price

Ekrin Athletics is one of those rare companies that offers a Lifetime Warranty. That’s right, for as long as they’re in business (and I don’t think they’re going anywhere anytime soon), they will send you a free replacement should your massage gun ever fail.

That’s a lot of peace of mind and one less thing to worry about. If you decide you must go with a Theragun, their warranty is limited to only 1 year.

Currently, the best place to buy the Ekrin 365 is through their website. Listed at $179.99, it’s not the cheapest massage gun out there, but as we’ve outlined, it’s the absolute best deal all things considered. And given we have a good relationship with the folks over there at Ekrin Athletics, you can score an extra 20% off with our promo code “RT20“. For the math adverse, that brings the price down to about $144! Oh and that does include FREE shipping too.

Final Thoughts

Good or bad, there is no shortage of massage guns to chose from. In the last few years the market has been flooded with, what seems, countless numbers of them.

At this point we’ve probably tested more than anyone. And while some are exceptional and surprising, others are just flat out horrible. We find that many of the cheap ones from Amazon are cheap for a reason: Poor quality and sketchy battery life.

The Ekrin 365 represents the complete opposite of that. In every testing category, it benchmarked above and beyond our expectations. This massage gun is no feather weight. With premium features and build quality that trumps much more expensive models, the Ekrin 365 is a steal.
